I can hardly believe it, but I am a Food Blog is come up on three years old! Waaaaay back in 2012, my very first post was Afternoon Beer, a little Valentine’s Day treat I thought up for Mike. This year, to celebrate my blog birthday and Valentine’s day, I thought I’d do a Afternoon Beer redux.

But just what is Afternoon Beer you ask? Well, as obsessed as I am with fancy tea rooms and tiers of tiny food, Mike isn’t such a fan. I love whiling away the hours with fancy tea sandwiches, scones and clotted cream and mini desserts, but apparently it’s not really a boy thing. In defence of tea time and tiny foods everywhere, I created Afternoon Beer, man-approved minature snacks that go great with beer.

Over the next two weeks I’ll be sharing all the recipes, but for now, here’s a sneak peek of my 2015 Afternoon Beer Redux. I skipped out on the classic tiers because I thought a wooden board would be more manly, but I still kind of went along with what’s served at afternoon tea.

For savouries we have: Mini Lasanga Cups with Ricotta and Spicy Ragu, Mini Beef and IPA Cheddar Crust Pies, and Black Pepper Gougère BLTS. Instead of the classic scones with clotted cream and jam, I made Mini Green Onion Cream Cheese Biscuits and Spicy Sausage Gravy. And of course I did a tiny sweets course with Baby Cinnamon Buns with Whiskey Cream Cheese Frosting and an IPA Beeramisu.

Mini food and ice cold beer for the win! A happy (early, in this case) Valentine’s Day indeed.

PS – Check out the difference between my very first post and this one! Isn’t it crazy!?
PPS – The gorgeous board in the photos can be found here!

  1. omg! how can you do so many dishes at once! And everything’s in a pair, hahaa so cute. Was this “manly afternoon beer” really just a party of two?

What a fantastic idea! I know my man (and brother, uncle, best male friend etc….) would go absolutely crazy for this. Much as I love a traditional afternoon tea, I would quite happily settle down to an afternoon beer too. Looking forward to the recipes to follow!

What a great idea! My boyfriend’s b’day is coming up, and this would be perfect for it. He’s kind of a craft beer nerd, but I think he’d have fun choosing the beer pairings for snacks like this.

I love fancy tea, but you’re right- it’s such a girlie indulgence. I LOVE the idea of afternoon beer to get guys on board. Hmmm. Genius.

  5. I absolutely love this idea! I love tea, too, but afternoon beer sounds a little more fun!
